Key stages and typical timescales

  1. Assessment

We review your immigration history, your documents and the route you want to use, and confirm whether you appear to meet the requirements. Usually within 1 to 2 weeks of receiving your documents.

  2. Preparing the application

We give you a document checklist, review the evidence and prepare the application form and legal representations. Usually 2 to 6 weeks, depending mainly on how quickly the evidence can be gathered.

  3. Submission and biometrics

We submit the application and you attend a biometrics appointment or use the identity app where the route allows it.

  4. Decision

The Home Office decides the application. Its published service standards depend on the route, for example around 3 weeks for many visit visas applied for outside the UK, 8 weeks for many applications made inside the UK, and up to 6 months for settlement and citizenship. Priority services are available for some routes at an extra Home Office fee.

  5. Review or appeal, if needed

If an application is refused we advise on administrative review, a fresh application or an appeal to the First-tier Tribunal. Appeal hearings are usually listed several months after the appeal is lodged.

Overall timescale. Most applications take 1 to 2 months to prepare and then depend on the Home Office service standard for the route. We confirm the current published processing time when we submit.
